What To Expect

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary opened in 1927 as a safe refuge for sick, injured, and oprhaned koalas, at a time when the species was being culled for the fur trade. Founder, Claude Reid, recognised something had to be done to help protect one of Australia's most iconic species. Today, Lone Pine remains as a destination not only see native Australian animals, but to also connect and learn, and to leave feeling inspired to make small, positive changes in your daily lives to help protect native wildlife and habitats.

Along with koalas and kangaroos, Lone Pine hosts a sheepdog show where you see the hardworking dogs round up a herd of sheep, responding to their master’s whistles, calls and hand signals. You can see owls, kites and sea eagles soar above you at the Birds of Prey show, or marvel at the colorful feathers of the wild lorikeets that fly in twice daily for feedings. Other bird species and a population of Eastern Water Dragons, a lizard that grows up to 3 feet (90cm) long, also like to visit Lone Pine’s lush natural parkland.

Everything from the cruise down the river with commentary to the staff on the boat and the koala sanctuary itself were absolutely beyond incredible. I would recommend this to anyone (all ages) and I would do this again in a heart beat. Big thank you to everyone involved!

Lone Pine is such a wonderful stop, seeing so many koalas so close along with a ton of other animals was awe inspiring. The river cruise was insightful and the boat has delicious bites (try the homemade sausage rolls) and good drinks- a relaxing and scenic way to arrive at Lone Pine. Staff on the Mirimar were super friendly. Only negative was the fiberglass chairs, we left with a ton of fiberglass splinters in our hands and bums from the white chairs- OUCH!
Wonderful experience

The boat trip is a lovely way to arrive at a destination. Interesting commentary about the history and homes of the river and good coffee while you move slowly past. The sanctuary itself has many koalas on display with their habitat rather small. There are many examples of Australian birds and the raptor display was loved by the children. A great day out.
